Port of Antwerp goes further towards efficient, sustainable modal shift

1.4 million euros is invested over the next three years in projects aimed at making port-generated freight traffic smoother and more efficient. Seven projects have been selected for financial support and they will together reduce the number of truck trips by up to 250,000 annually. The Flemish government in turn is building on the Call for Proposals by the Port Authority, and in the next few months it will release a further 1.4 million euros for projects to make transport in and around Antwerp more sustainable.

Mobility is crucial

Following a Call for Proposal issued in May of this year, the Antwerp Port Authority has now selected seven private-sector projects contributing to more efficient truck and other transport in and around the port. Over the next few years these projects can each count on maximum support of 200,000 euros spread over a period of three years.
The seven selected projects:

  •  DP World: modal shift to rail reducing the number of truck trips by 50,000 per year;
  •  Delcatrans: modal shift to barge for reefer containers resulting in 5,400 less truck trips annually;
  •  Hakka: avoiding empty truck trips by setting up a digital platform for road transports, saving 120,000 truck trips per year;
  •  Port-Liner: construction of new electric or hybrid Kempenaar barges resulting in 23,000 fewer trucks annually;
  •  Danser: innovation barge concepts resulting in shift to barge to save 26,000 truck trips per year;
  •  Euroports Inland Terminals: new direct rail link to Liège, saving 16,200 truck trips per year;
  •  Slovak Shipping and Ports: new direct rail link to Bratislava, saving 6,000 truck trips per year.
